Alverno High School is pleased to announce the hire of Megan Hoover, M.Ed., as its new director of college guidance. Hoover will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Alverno’s former Director of College Guidance Eileen Garabedian, who retired in June after 29 years at Alverno.

“We are very excited to announce the hire of Megan Hoover as the new director of college guidance at Alverno High School,” said Julia V. Fanara, head of school. “Megan brings with her a diverse background in college counseling, which includes experience with both domestic and international students in an all-girls setting. In addition to working with other independent schools across the country, Megan brings extensive knowledge of east and west colleges, as well as others throughout the United States. She believes in the value of taking college tours and works with students to create individual college plans aligned with their goals and interests. Megan’s broad experience with 21st century technology and collegiate opportunities make her a great fit for our campus and we look forward to the new insight and perspective she will bring to our community.”

Megan originally hails from Bethesda, Md. As a graduate of Georgetown Visitation in Washington, D.C., she has first-hand knowledge and great respect for the benefits of educating young women in an all-girls school setting. She is thrilled to be able to take on her new role as director of college guidance at Alverno High School. Megan has a bachelor’s in human services from Elon University and master’s in education from The Catholic University of America in School Counseling.

Most recently, Megan served as the director of college counseling at Oldfiels School, an all-girls private boarding school in Glencoe, Md. Prior to that, she worked as the assistant director of college counseling at Sandy Spring Friends School in Sandy Springs, Md.

When not working, Megan enjoys spending time with family and friends. On weekends, she enjoys swimming, hiking, kayaking, and attending sporting events of all kinds. Megan will arrive at Alverno High School after a week-long trip exploring college campuses and BBQ establishments as she drives across the country from her family vacation home in Virginia Beach, Va. She will be writing a blog about her visits and experiences that she looks forward to sharing with the Alverno community upon her arrival in the fall.

“I look forward to becoming a member of the Alverno High School community in my new role as the director of college guidance,” remarks Megan. “I am especially looking forward to the opportunity to get to know all of the unique young women that make up the Alverno community. After interviewing for the position and learning more about Alverno, I am confident that my experience and Alverno’s commitment to academic excellence and individual experiences will work together to continue to produce exceptional young women.”
