Sierra Madre Resident Takes Graduate Deanship at Cal State L.A.

Cheryl Lynn Ney of Sierra Madre was recently appointed as associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies at Cal State L.A.
Cheryl Lynn Ney of Sierra Madre was recently appointed as associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies at Cal State L.A., effective July 6, 2009.
The university said they found Ney to be “a strong advocate for building a diverse workforce of science professionals”.
At the new post, Ney’s focus will be working with the faculty and staff of Cal State L.A. “to ensure that its distinctive educational experience is serving the needs of all of its students as well as the community and the state of California,” according to a statement released by the university’s public affairs department.
In response to the promotion, Ney said that she was “pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of a vibrant and dynamic educational institution rising to the challenges and opportunities of today’s world in one of the largest cities in the U.S.”
Since 2006, Ney has served as associate vice provost for academic programs at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she was also a professor of chemistry in the College of Math and Science.
Other posts she has held include provost and vice president of academic affairs at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio; provost-in-residence at the Associated New American College Consortium; and as a National Science Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor of Women in Science in the University of Wisconsin system.
Ney earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Chicago, her M.S. in chemistry from Baylor University, and her B.S. in chemistry from Arizona State University.
Desdemona Cardoza, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Cal State L.A., said, “We are delighted with the appointment of Dr. Ney to this very important administrative position and welcome her to the Cal State L.A. community.”
