An Open Letter to Our Readers

An Open Letter to Our Readers

When I first began my tenure as editor of these newspapers on the first day of 2008, we set forth a number of goals for our newspapers. Some of these are still works in progress, and some of these have been great successes. A shining example of the latter would have to be our efforts [...]

A Few Final Words for Sierra Madre Bloggers

A Few Final Words for Sierra Madre Bloggers

Opinion by: Terry Miller & John Stephens Despite the hundreds of letters, phone calls and comments singing the praises for the posture this paper took in the weeks preceding the recent city council election, there still is an element willing to take a sneering thrust at our reportage. We were a bit taken aback by [...]

Letters to the Editor: I mailed in my absentee ballot before flying out of town, and appreciate the City of Sierra Madre, sierramadreweekly.com, and other local media, for enabling me to stay in touch with this pivotal election on line. Crumbling Crawford Camp Continues Critical Coldhearted and Cruel Comments

Let us address the losing council candidate Crawford’s latest attack on the Weekly staff and New Council, point by biased point: 1.“With the return to power of John Buchanan and Joe Mosca, has the Cumquat Era returned as well? “ -What the heck does that mean Mr. Crawford!? 2. “In the name of a twisted [...]

Oh the Crimes, They Are a-Changin’!

Oh the Crimes, They Are a-Changin’!

There’s a new breed of criminal in town and I for one would like to officially propose that we change the laws in order to publicly dishonor those responsible for character assassination on the internet tubes. If it’s spoken, it’s slander and if it’s in print, it’s libel, both of which are punishable in court. [...]

America’s Big Stick – Still Swinging After All These Years

America’s Big Stick – Still Swinging After All These Years

We came across this letter published in the Pasadena Independent in 1958 written by Sierra Madre activist , Terry Mackenzie. We thought it appropriate and all the more timely to re-print the letter 51 years later when our country is yet again at war in the Middle East; yet again in the Pasadena Independent as [...]

A Surefire Way to Boost Farm Exports: Sell to Cuba

Illustration by Thom Gastelum U.S. farm income will drop 38 percent this year due to global economic woes and because “demand for exports has tailed off, with few options available to expand marketing elsewhere,” according to a Department of Agriculture report issued last month. Actually, there’s a small but surefire option to boost American [...]

Op-Ed: SCAG Decision Should Not be Based on Scare Tactics and Misinformation

Op-Ed: SCAG Decision Should Not be Based on Scare Tactics and Misinformation

The only area city that is not a member of SCAG is Temple City.
So for a nominal membership dues fee, Sierra Madre can participate in planning its future, or it can choose to save that money, and have SCAG dictate to it what it has decided Sierra Madre is going to do (or not do). Seems kind of like a no-brainer, right? Why should we surrender our opportunity to provide input into the future of this region?
